Rate Adaptation Based on Collision Probability for IEEE 802.11 WLANs

چکیده
Nowadays IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) support multiple transmission rates. To achieve the best performance, transmitting stations adopt the various forms of automatic rate fallback (ARF). However, ARF suffers from severe performance degradation as the number of transmitting stations increases. In this paper, we propose a new rate adaptation scheme which adjusts the ARF’s up/down threshold according to the channel contention level. Simulation result shows that the proposed scheme achieves fairly good performance compared with the existing schemes. key words: IEEE 802.11, rate adaptation, ARF

Error Bound of Collision Probability Estimation in Non-saturated IEEE 802.11 WLANs
We analytically prove that the error in the channel idle time-based collision probability estimation in face of non-saturated stations is bounded by 2/(CWmin+1) in the IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs). This work explicitly quantifies the impact of non-saturation, and the result vindicates the use of the estimation technique in real-life IEEE 802.11 WLANs, in such applications as the acknowledg...
متن کاملAchieving performance enhancement in IEEE 802.11 WLANs by using the DIDD backoff mechanism
Wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on the IEEE 802.11 standards have been widely implemented mainly because of their easy deployment and low cost. The IEEE 802.11 collision avoidance procedures utilize the binary exponential backoff (BEB) scheme that reduces the collision probability by doubling the contention window after a packet collision. In this paper, we propose an easy-to-impleme...
متن کاملA High Tcp Performance Rate Adaptation Algorithm for Ieee 802.11 Networks
Rate adaptation is a link layer mechanism critical to the system performance by exploiting the multiple transmission rates provided by current IEEE 802.11 WLANs. The key challenge for designing such an algorithm is how to select the most appropriate transmission rate under different environments. The first generation rate adaptation schemes perform poorly in a collision dominant environment bec...
متن کاملA Rate-Adaptive Multimedia Multicasting Mechanism in Multi-Rate 802.11 Wireless LANs∗
IEEE 802.11 WLAN service is broadening its service area rapidly. One of the major driving factors of WLANs is multimedia services such as VOD or HDTV delivered by multicast protocols. However, there have been little research on how to efficiently operate multicast protocols in IEEE 802.11 WLANs. The most widespread variants of IEEE 802.11 standards, 802.11b and 802.11a, are characterized by the...
متن کاملCollision-Aware Backoff Mechanisms for IEEE 802, 11 WLANs
The distributed coordination function (DCF) is the most widely deployed medium access control (MAC) protocol for IEEE 802.11 WLANs. It is a carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) scheme which employs a binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm to reduce the collision probability. In this paper we propose a novel backoff algorithm, collision-aware backoff mechanism (CA...
